Enrichment Descriptions

1st Enrichments
Audio ProductionStudents will use Garageband to produce many genres of music. They will produce a compilation CD at the end of the semester.
Rock band LabStudents who are interested in the application of music through performance in a small Pop/Rock ensemble are invited to join and discover the world of music.
Art exploration: MuralsWe will be working on murals and paintings throughout the school. Specifically the bathrooms in each wing. We will be calculating our space for each painting.
Book ClubAfter agreeing on a book for our club to read (to be chosen from some amazing titles), we will engage in drinking lemonade, silently reading our books, and discussing the characters and events in our books. I have some wonderful discussion questions to get your minds wandering to amazing destinations.
Swimming
Get ready for summer fun and learn how to swim. We will be swimming at South High School's swimming pool. Please be ready to bring appropriate swimming suit (tankini or one piece suits, no string bikini), towel and googles. All swimming levels welcomed! Be prepared to get your hair wet and you will not have time to dry your hair after swimming.
School News WritersStudents will write news stories, interview members of the Phoenix family, and gather pictures for the school news that broadcasts on Monday mornings.
Technical Theatre 101Students will learn the skills needed for a running crew in a theatre. Lighting, Sound, and Shifting will all be covered within the quarter. Students will advocate for technology through a Donor's Choose essay.
Karaoke Voice ClassStudents get the chance to develop their singing skills by choosing solos and group songs to perform. We will work together to make our techniques better and have fun learning how to sing well.
Chess ClubLearn the art of Chess... Chess is a two-player strategy board game in which students will place their opponent's king "under attack". Chess is one of the best tools for learning logic, problem solving, and visualization. Be A Part Of The Royal Family.
Mission to MarsDo you think space is awesome? Does the idea of living on another planet sound appealing to you? Then this enrichment is for you! Mission to Mars will look into humans colonizing Mars as well as many other interesting topics in space exploration!
Disc GolfDisc Golf is a great sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. We will learn the techniques needed in throwing discs and eventually play a few rounds.
FishingFishing at City Park!! This enrichment class will be a double enrichment so you will need to sign up for both sections. We will be walking to and from City Park. Appropriate footwear is a must!! You are encouraged to bring your own tackle and equipment, however, if you do not have your own there will be loaner equipment available. A charge of $2.00 will be required to purchase bait and tackle for all to use. (Both Enrichments)
Piano/keyboardWould you like to learn to play the piano ? This class will teach the basics that you will need to play your favorite songs, and create your own origional music!
Garden/ Wild HabitatWe will be preparing the soil and planting the gardens for the summer. You need to be willing to get dirty as we work the ground and separate the worms from their soil.
Post Secret: A Collection of SecretsWhat is Post Secret? Post Secret is a collection of anonymous (your name is kept private) secrets made by students. But don't worry-secrets won't be shared with others outside of this class and there is no need to be embarrassed about sharing because no one will know who you are. Students will create multi-themed, postcard sized pictures/doodles to attach to a secret of theirs. These secrets will be put together into a book that each student will take home at the end of the quarter.

Pressed/Dried Flower ProjectsStudents will learn the art of pressing/drying flowers and turning them into crafts. Students will be making pressed flower notecards so that they can write notes and poetry to people who are special in their lives.
Hip Hop AppreciationDo you like hip hop music? Are you interested in music production and wonder how rap instrumentals are made? Then take this class! In hip hop appreciation, students will have the opportunity to analyze fundamental pieces of hip hop from a socio-cultural perspective that will allow them to analyze the art form, appreciate the music for what it presents, and discuss the social and cultural considerations of the music genre. In this class, students will listen and critique hip-hop music, learn more about musical production, and will have time to write and create their own rap songs.
Learn the Basics to GolfingStudents will have the opportunity to learn golf etiquette, the basic rules and glossary of playing golf. We will be walking to Elmwood Golf Course during some of the classes to practice on the driving range and play a few holes. Be ready with water and comfortable shoes. (Both Enrichments)
Explorer ClubDiscover real-world career experiences and leadership development opportunities. You will engage in character, leadership and career focused activities. Facilitated through a community collaboration with the Boys Scouts of America.
Yoga for BeginnersGood vibes only! In this class, Ms. Gilman will teach you proper yoga and meditation techniques and will help you improve your physical fitness and flexibility. You will improve your overall well-being by writing daily in a journal, practicing meditation, and showing gratitude. Once the weather gets nice, be prepared to bring your yoga practice outside under the sun! Required materials: notebook, pencil, P.E. shirt, either black or purple shorts/pants that fall under the length policy, and a positive attitude.
CSI Love CSI? Love to see how crimes are solved? Want to learn how investigators are able to find out their suspects? This enrichment is for you! We will look a crime scenes, evaluate evidence, and understand different type of analysis. We will also be able to travel to the crime lab here in Pueblo to see how an actual crime lab looks and runs.
Zoo ExplorersWhy do we have zoos? What is the history of zoos? Do you think zoos should exist - why or why not? We will spend the last quarter asking these questions. You will watch videos and do short readings to learn about why zoos exist and take multiple field trips to the Pueblo Zoo. You must be prepared to walk both ways (30 minutes each way!) - wear good shoes and bring a water bottle! We will also talk to zoo keepers, do research and create an enrichment toy for animals! This is a double enrichment.

BasketballIf you are interested in learning more about basketball this enrichment is for you! If you've never played or if you played on the school team, all talent levels are welcome! We will learn fundamentals as well as play full court games!

AV CrewLearn the ins and outs of audio and video. You will learn how to set up mixers, speakers, microphones and other devices that are used for live events.You will have the opportunity to work the events held at the school, including plays and other performances.

Traveling into the Past with Dr Who!Did you ever fantasize about traveling into the past and meeting someone famous? Would you want to meet Queen Elizabeth I or how about Shakespeare? We will travel back into time in a little blue box with the famous Dr Who TV Show to meet famous people throughout time. We will also discuss time travel ethical dilemmas like "Would you kill Hitler if you could travel back into time and what consequences could it cause throughout time..."
School News BroadcastStudents will film and record the school news with the help of the AV Crew!
Mock TrialGuilty? Innocent? You decide! Students will use debate, public speaking, and the law to role play lawyers, jurists, media reporters, defendants, plaintiffs and witnesses.
Creative PercussionStudents will create rhythms and play them together. They will get the opportunity to jam with other musicians and choose just about anything from broken car parts to sheets of tin to make sounds.
